Metropolitan Workshop’s Dublin office has won planning permission for a 20-home scheme in the city’s southern suburb. The Annesley Gardens project, for Seabren Developments, sits in a former light industrial backland with the site surrounded on all sides by protected period housing. The project comprises two house types: four-bedroom houses with asymmetric bay windows and three-bedroom houses that feature entrances projecting over the threshold to create covered entrances. All of the homes will be two storeys with an additional floor of accommodation in the roof spaces. They have been designed in brick to fit in alongside their 19th-century neighbours. Primary access will be via an existing laneway from the adjacent terraced street of 19th-century red-brick houses.
The practice’s Dublin studio director Jonny McKenna said: “Annesley Gardens demonstrates how carefully modelled schemes can bring forward characterful places on backland urban sites. Increasing densities close to existing services and transport links delivers on the government’s aspiration to build 40 per cent of new homes within the built-up footprint of existing settlements.”
