HENRY J LYONS MAKES WAF SHORTLIST

Clerys Quarter by Henry J Lyons has been shortlisted in the Mixed-Use and Creative Re-Use categories at this year’s World Architecture Festival

The shortlist for the 2024 World Architecture Festival (WAF) has been announced, with Clerys Quarter shortlisted in two categories – Mixed-Use and Creative Re-Use. Winners will be announced at the live event which will take place in Singapore from 6 – 8 November, where all finalists present their projects to a panel of judges at the international festival.

The overall shortlist has been selected from 800 entries and comprises over 480 projects from more than 350 unique practices. According to WAF, it celebrates the best new completed buildings and landscapes as well as the most inspiring future architectural concepts, across 33 categories, ranging from residential, to transport, to retrofit.

The restoration of Clerys Quarter was centred around the refurbishment and extension of the historic Clerys building, originally constructed in 1922. The project has resulted in the creation of a new retail, office, hotel and leisure destination and included both traditional elements and modern concepts to enhance the evolving regeneration of this part of the inner city.

Works included the restoration of the colonnaded façade, internal staircases, columns and ceilings, along with the famous Clerys’ clock. Clerys’ original restaurant and bar, The Tea Rooms, has also been fully refurbished and will join the fifth floor restaurant and viewing platform, which will cater for up to 600 people and will be open to the public, whether they’re eating or not. Although two new floors have been added to the site, they don’t interrupt the look of the façade which has remained the same for more than a century. It’s expected the building won’t fully reopen until 2025.

WAF Programme Director Paul Finch said: “Another terrific set of entries made shortlisting projects a tough process. Once again, the range of geographies represented was wide and we look forward to seeing architects across the world at this year’s Festival.

“This year we have also made a selection of more than 30 awards in the WAFX section, where we recognise future projects addressing the world’s most pressing environmental and social issues and these will be announced on the 15th July. With 175 judges coming to Singapore in November, this will be a truly international event and we look forward to welcoming both familiar and new names for the award presentations and our thematic conference programme, ‘Tomorrow’, which will review the directions in which architecture is heading in relation to 21st century conditions.”
